Day trip to Bucerias from Puerto Vallarta with beach town has the best ceviche.
We took a day trip to Bucerias, about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta. This small beach town is popular with Canadians and known for its seafood and relaxed atmosphere.
Our first stop was Mariscos Al Chino, a restaurant that’s been around since 1963 right on the highway. The location is actually a good sign because it means locals eat there. I ordered the shrimp capeado (battered shrimp) and it was fantastic, super crunchy outside and perfectly cooked inside. The tacos were 50 pesos each and packed with seafood.
Bucerias means “place of the divers” but it was originally called Santa Julia de las Tablas because the area was known for tropical wood exports to Europe. In the 1930s, more people worked in fishing and diving, so the name changed. It’s still very much a fishing town that has expanded into tourism.
We visited during early October, right before high season and during tropical storm season. The weather was windy and cloudy, so not ideal for lying on the beach, but we still walked around and explored. The town is small and you can walk from the highway to the malecon in less than three minutes.
We stopped at a cafe for coffee and ended up getting a huge cinnamon roll that was more like an apple cinnamon cake with cream inside. My americano was 50 pesos and Alan’s drink was 60. The cafe had incredibly fast wifi (over 100 mbps) and bamboo straws.
Before leaving, we went to Mariscos Villa Real on the side of the market. This is where locals eat and it’s so popular they have seating on both sides of the road. I got fish ceviche on a tostada for only 40 pesos. They give you a fork with the tostada, which is smart since everything usually falls off. The ceviche was ground fish in lemon with carrot, cilantro, tomato, and avocado.
Bucerias has a very relaxed, slow vibe. We saw some development happening, and there are concerns about infrastructure keeping up with tourism growth. Many places were closed for vacation until October 15th. I’ll definitely come back on a sunny day to experience the beach properly.
