Snorkeling in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – What To Do on Your Day In Port

We went on a 7 day Mexican Riviera cruise on the Carnival Miracle. We decided to purchase a shore excursion for the port of Puerto Vallarta onboard. The name of the tour was “Wild Dolphins & Snorkeling” I think this tour has been renamed “Whales, Dolphins & Snorkeling at Marietas Island”. It was $80. US each.

It starts out with a quick walk on the dock to a large catamaran. Then it’s about an hour out to the island. You have to transfer from the catamaran to a smaller boat, a dinghy. Next they take you near the mouth of a sea cave. You need to jump out of the dinghy and swim through the sea cave to a hidden beach. Some people call it ‘secret beach’. It seems the secret is out. The beach is packed with tourists.
On each side of the beach are sea caves to explore. If you can swim with a pair of water shoes, they would be good in the caves.

After some time on the hidden beach, you need to swim back to the dinghy. After you get back to the catamaran, they take you to another part of the island to snorkel. The water is clear, but there is not much to see under the water.

It was a fun trip. We really enjoyed it.
